Video Tips

In this short video I am demonstrating how I use the Dome Round brushes to paint light values on round objects using acrylic paint. It is so easy to put cheeks on ornaments, or highlights on small fruit in one step.

Note: During the video I state that the brush is 100% sable. It is actually a combination of synthetic filament (for increased durability) and natural hair.

A little bit about my brushes. It is difficult to pick out the best quality of these brushes because they are so versatile. I worked several years with Shirley Miller at Loew Cornell to be sure these brushes would work they way I wanted them to They had to be a work brush - able to take some scrubbing abuse, absorbent - to hold mediums, and soft enough - to blend smoothly without leaving brush marks. They are 100% sable and have a rounded or "domed" top. I use these brushes and acrylic paint in combination with Folk Art Extender.

I use I them to soften and blend acrylic paint using a medium. I was asked if it could be used with water in the same manor. I tired it and yes it worked! I am not proficient using water, but for those who are it works just as well. I also know they work well to blend and soften oil paint without leaving brush marks. Because it is a natural hair it absorbs, has snap and can be used to apply, move or scrub paint.

About Folk Art Extender

  • I think the most important thing to remember when using Folk Art Extender is that water and extender are mortal enemies. If you are unsuccessful using the medium try using less water in your brush to paint. Do not rinse the Dome Round brush in water until the end of your painting session. Clean it by dry wiping it on the damp area of a paper towel.
  • Water will remove paint and extender if it has not had sufficient drying time.
  • Always apply a thin sheen of extender to the surface.
  • Load your painting brush the same way you would if you were going to float color only use less paint and less water.
  • Keep the brush you use to apply Extender with out of water.
  • It does not matter if Extender goes beyond the area you want to paint.
  • The drying time in most cases is 3-5 minutes.
  • If it is too wet you will see paint lifting or see paint from your brush as you brush it over a dry paper towel.
  • You can test an area to see if it is dry by applying more extender.
  • Once dry objects can be reinforced using more extender and color in the same way.
  • Cover smaller and smaller areas with each application.
  • An area maybe dry enough to reapply extender if there is no sheen, even if the outside area has still has sheen.
